SIARHEI TSIKHANOUSKI - former belarusian political prisoner

Wednesday, September 17 at 3:30 - 4:45pm  (reception to follow)

CWY Auditorium (second floor)

Tsikhanouski was a popular blogger and activist when he was imprisoned after announcing plans to challenge the Belarusian strongman Alexander Lukashenko in the 2020 presidential election. He was sentenced to over 19 years in prison on charges of "organizing mass riots."

Following his arrest, his wife Sviatlana ran in his place. After a presidential election in Belarus widely viewed as rigged, hundreds of thousands poured into the streets in the largest protests in the nation's history.

The ensuing crackdown resulted in more than 35,000 people detained, many badly beaten by the police. Tsikhanouski was released in a prisoner swap in June arranged by the Trump administration.

This event is co-sponsored by GNSI and IREES and is free and open to the public.
