Undergraduate Awards

The Department of Chemistry is dedicated to student success. We are committed to helping each student achieve academic excellence and realize their educational goals. Towards this, Chemistry recognizes through scholarships and awards the outstanding achievement of our students who have demonstrated performance in learning, research and service. These scholarships and awards are made possible through the generosity of faculty, organizations, corporations and individuals like you. Recipients are recognized at our annual Scholarship and Alumni Celebration held in the spring each year.

DIVISION AWARDS

Analytical Division

ACS Analytical Chemistry Award

The American Chemical Society Division of Analytical Chemistry and the Journal of Analytical Chemistry sponsor an undergraduate award to encourage student interest in this discipline and to recognize students who display an aptitude in analytical chemistry. The Department of Chemistry's analytical division selects a student each year from those who have completed all the undergraduate analytical courses.

Robert S. Braman Analytical Chemistry Award

The analytical award is named in honor of Dr. Robert S. Braman, who was a member of the faculty in the Department of Chemistry from 1967 to 2003. The award is given to the top student in Analytical Chemistry as determined by the faculty member of the analytical division. 

Biochemistry Division

T.C. Owen Biochemistry Award

The biochemistry award is named in honor of Dr. T.C. Owen, who was a member of the Department of Chemistry faculty from 1964 to 1998. He also served as the chair from 1974-1978. He maintained his extraordinary service as Emeritus after his retirement. The award is given to the top student in Biochemistry as determined by the faculty member of the Biochemistry division. . 

General Chemistry Division

Jesse S. Binford General Chemistry Award

The general chemistry award is named in honor of Dr. Jesse S. Binford, who was a member of the faculty in the Department of Chemistry from 1961-2003. The award recipient is selected by the members of the faculty who teach the general chemistry classes from among the students who earned an A in both General Chemistry I and General Chemistry II. 

Inorganic Chemistry Division

Joseph Stanko Inorganic Chemistry Award

The inorganic chemistry award is named in honor of Dr. Joseph Stanko, who was a member of the Department of Chemistry faculty from 1973-2003.  The award is given to the top student in Inorganic Chemistry as determined by the faculty member of the Inorganic Division.

Jay Worrell Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is named in honor of Dr. Jay Worrell, who was a member of the chemistry faculty from 1967-2002. He retired as a professor emeritus. This scholarship is awarded to a senior BS or BA Chemistry major or BMS major who has a strong performance in academics but who also is motivated and interested in chemistry with special emphasis on inorganic chemistry. The student has also demonstrated excitement about chemistry and is interested in a career in chemistry. 

Organic Chemistry Division

George Wenzinger Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is named in honor of Dr. George Wenzinger who was a member of the Department of Chemistry faculty from 1963-1999. He was also an emeritus professor. This scholarship is awarded to a senior BS or BA Chemistry major or BMS major who has a strong performance in academics but who also is motivated and interested in chemistry with special emphasis on organic chemistry. The student has also demonstrated excitement about chemistry and is interested in a career in chemistry.  

Jack E. Fernandez Organic Chemistry Award

The organic chemistry award is named in honor of Dr. Jack E. Fernandez, who was a member of the chemistry faculty and served as the department chair for 1994-1995. The award is given to the top student in Organic Chemistry as determined by the faculty member of the Organic Division. 

Physical Chemistry Division

Jeff C. Davis Physical Chemistry Award

The physical chemistry award is named in honor of Dr. Jefferson C. Davis, Jr. Dr. Davis was a member of the faculty in the Department of Chemistry from 1965-1998. He served as the Chair of the Department from 1978-1982 and again from 1995-1998. The award is given to the top student in Phyiscal Chemistry as determined by the faculty member of the Physical Chemistry division. 

RESEARCH AWARDS

Clear Springs Land Undergraduate Research Award

Clear Springs Land is a local company that has endowed money with the Department of Chemistry towards student research. Each year members of the faculty can nominate students who are majoring in chemistry and have contributed through papers or presentations to research. These are submitted to the undergraduate council who selects the award winner. 

 

 

T.C. Owen Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award

Dr. Owen initiated this scholarship to encourage undergraduate research. Each year members of the faculty nominate students who are majoring in chemistry and have contributed through papers or presentations to research. These are submitted to the undergraduate council who selects the award winner.

UNDERGRADUATE COUNCIL AWARDS

American Institute of Chemists Award

Founded in 1923, the American Institute of Chemists has fostered the advancement of the chemical profession in the United States. This organization has a student award program to honor outstanding seniors majoring in chemistry. The awards are given in recognition of demonstrated ability, leadership, and professional promise. The department's undergraduate council selects the recipients from the top chemistry students. 

Calvin Maybury Department Scholarship, BS

This award is named in honor of Dr. Calvin Maybury who was a member of the faculty of the Department of Chemistry from 1961-1987. He also served as the chair from 1963-1974. This award is presented to a student who is a BS chemistry major within one year of graduation. This student must have an overall GPA of 3.5 or better and a 3.5 or better GPA in chemistry coursework with a minimum of 20 hours in chemistry classes.
